Our Environment

Tourism businesses rely on the environment in their local area to help attract their customers and ensure that they enjoy their stay. At Rosemount Cottage we recognize our responsibility to manage the Environmental impacts of our business. We work with the Cumbria Business Environment Network to assess the

environmental impacts of the products we use, our consumption of energy and water and the waste we create and have achieved the Gold Award for Environmental Management.

Our aim at Rosemount Cottage is to provide high quality comfortable accommodation and facilities for our guests whilst being conscious of and minimising where possible our carbon footprint and impact on the environment.

To achieve this we use local and homemade produce wherever possible and manage our

environmental impact by ‘reducing, re-using and recycling’ wherever we can. We encourage our guests to help us achieve this broad policy.

We are members of the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and undertake to maintain our surroundings in a manner to support and attract wildlife. We have planted our gardens to attract various species of butterfly and have over 30 species of birds either resident or visiting us for food.

Keep your eyes open and you may see our local Barn Owl hunting in the field behind the house in the evening and bats flying past at dusk.

Burgh Marsh is just a short walk and in winter the marshes in this area become the home of over 20,000 Barnacle and Pink Footed Geese which arrive here from the Arctic Circle.

There are many nature reserves in the local area. At Finglandrigg Wood National Nature Reserve (B5305—just beyond Kirkbampton) red squirrels are resident. Campfield Farm (RSPB) overlooks the Solway beyond Bowness—over 85,000 waders winter on the Solway providing a spectacular sight. Other local reserves include Drumburgh Moss (Cumbria Wildlife Trust), Glasson Moss (National Nature Reserve) and Bowness on Solway (Cumbria Wildlife Trust).
